The city of Qufu in Shandong province is eminently recognised as Confucius’ birthplace, and is home to the historic Confucius Temple. Adjacent to this is JW Marriott Qufu, which seeks to celebrate ancient heritage with modern elegance. Drawing inspiration from the philosopher, the lobby is imbued with a scholarly air of quiet nobility — the space is likened to a courtyard with a raised stone pond, on which a sleek statue of Confucius kneels before a ginkgo tree installation created with interwoven metal script. Slate tiles, grey stone, bronze lattice and white ceramic ornaments come together to compose tranquillity in harmony with a timeless design.
